Busy weekend. Lots of gorgeous natural light for taking pics of my newest pieces. I could really get used to this at home workshop kinda thing. The only thing that might make it better is a mountain view, but I'll live...
These are currently my favourites, due to be replaced by whatever I make in the next few days I'm sure. I've been trying harder to make silver items, but the only ones I like at the moment are oxidized. Silver is too clean at the moment. Or maybe not wintery enough.
I don't really know why brass has such a bad rap. Granted, I'm no metalsmith, but I can handle a little bit of tarnish on the skin, it comes right off. I like the antique look of it.
What else have I got to show you... Oh yah, you can simply click on my ETSY page link to the left here. That's where all of my latest stuff goes. There is also a Canadian site trying hard to make it's mark.

www.icraft.ca is a cute little site that gets a couple of pops a day (in the grand scheme of things), not as large (yet) as ETSY but it hasn't been around as long. I have a few items on there. I check their web site occasionally to see if there are job postings since this would be a dream for me.

I'm hoping to convince you to come back and check my wussy little blog more often, I'm really trying guys... But still, I'd rather be making things so it's hard to take the time to blog about it.

I didn't expect to find you here

..probably because you didn't expect to find me here. But here I am none the less. This year, I plan to focus more on my jewelry and knitting and actually taking the time to share it. At the end of the day I'm try to squeeze out a few more minutes before I have to go to bed and go to my "real" job. I like my day job, it's just hard to have two.
What I'm saying is the blogging and Facebooking and adding new items to ETSY usually suffers because of it. But, dear friend, I have made a pledge to myself, firm hand to knitter's badge, to "get out there more" in 2009 in hopes that 2010 (what are we gonna call that year? 2-10?) rings in with me completely and totally gasping for breath being so busy with this stuff.

There is really no excuse for my last posting being in November.. except that I'm not a good blogger. There are no "results" on blogs. I got to ESTY all the time because I get to see results. Did I sell anything? Is there anything new for me to buy? What's my competition like? There are so many reasons to check it.
I go to Facebook like crazy! It's sad but I'm comforted in the knowledge that YOU probably go there just as much as I do. - Has anyone hear the new Breeders? I Big "L", little "o-v-e" it- I post most of my new little projects on there. I also have a wee link to my ETSY page on here if you want to check things out.

Does anyone even visit my blog anymore? I can see why you wouldn't.

I guess I don't have any work people on here. I CAN mention that Bern and I are stoked about our newest life adventure to Vancouver. It's confirmed and we are slowly but surely getting the plans together. Should be leaving on a jet plane, Bern, me, Monk and Lupe , for July touch down. That's 3 MONTHS!

Surprise! It's fair to say I'm the worst blogger ever. It wouldn't be a lie. I have been thinking a lot about how much I love my knitting tattoo and that I'd really love to see some other knitting tattoos. If you know anyone who knows anyone please tell them to contact me. I'd love to post pictures of other people's knitting tattoos and see how many we can get. I'm thinking about getting another one (along with the 2 or 3 other tattoos I'm "thinking" about getting) Of course I want it to be something really stunning ... Anyway, send photos my way if you want me to post them.

what's new?

All of these things are new-ish. To the left is the copper bracelette I talked about in my last post.

I'm not feeling particularly wordy today, sorry. I just wanted to show what I have been working on. The Steelback Grand Prix is whizzing by outside my window, but the overcast sky and the rain are keeping things pleasant.

I posted a bunch of new things on my ETSY page yesterday and sold a pair of earrings in about 30 seconds, which made me proud. I sold another necklace later that evening, lucky me. This leads me to entertain the thought of making jewelery my main source of employment. That would be the dreamiest! ("dream" being the key word here)

Karen, I'm thinking of bringing in the things I have made to sell at work, it that bad? I think I'm just going to do it anyway.

Sooo.. not much to say. The summer feels awkward this year.. can't really explain it - it just started but I also feel like it's been summer for a long time.. I must be lost in a time warp or something. Maybe I'm wanting to rush though it because I'm not taking my summer vacation until September? That's probably what it is.

My silversmith classes are over for the time being. I'm a little disappointed but I know I need to work on the things I've learned and accept my limitations as far as tools, time, space,and good old $$ are concerned. For example, I certainly do not have at least $600.00 for a tumbler to polish my pieces. I don't even have $300.00 for the proper drill. I don't feel comfortable having a propane and oxygen torch in an apartment building, etc. I have purchased a few tools for the things I think I can work on at home and I'll get started there. I know in the future I'll have the opportunity to take further classes, I just need some patience.

Summer

I guess a lot of you have heard about this recently, but tonight was the first night we were around to witness the "re-lighting" of the CN Tower. I'm still deciding if I like it or if I think it's heinous.

It's fun to look at when it's one colour, but when it's purple and green at the same time, well, I'm not diggin' it. It also changes colour every 4 seconds (I've been counting)

Let's move on.

Here's something for Ron, who wanted to let me know he's a little disappointed that my blog has focused more on the silver smithing and not attention is being paid to the knitting.

So Ronny, here is my latest spinning.

I'm making some spiraled "slubbed" wool. It's been pretty fun so far, but of course I have to back track a little bit to make the "slubs" I've completed a wee skien of about 24 yards and once I set the twist I'll knit it up so I can see how it looks. So far I just like looking at it.

I've been playing with silver and beads a lot. Made quite a few pairs of earrings. I'm making a really cool copper bracelet in my silversmith class and I hope to have it finished this Wednesday night to show you.

Anyway, that's it for me. Sorry, not much excitement. Hope everyone had a fantastic weekend. Oh yah - I went karaoking this weekend....

Twice in one month..

Put your tongues back in your mouths folks and believe your eyes, c'est moi! Maybe I'm eager to show you my latest piece or maybe I need to sort through a few things via blog gab. We'll see how this plays out.

First, take a peep at my latest silversmith level I project:

This is the necklace I made in my last class for Janet's birthday gift. Remember my last blab about no wind in my sails? Well this wasn't even plan B. Meet plan C: Swallows.

At this time I want to remind everyone of the importance of making mistakes.

Mistake #1: While polishing the swallows in an attempt to finish the rough edges I ended up getting experimental with the sanding bits. in the end I really like a rubber bit that made the edges look really jagged. This is how I decided to end the project.

Mistake #2: I finished the edges and picked up a piece of fine sandpaper on the way to the tumbler (I don't remember if it's really called the tumbler, but it's like one of those toys you used to see in the Consumers catalogue where you put the rough rocks in and when you take them out they're smooth, you know?). I wanted to see if I could remove a few marks I wasn't liking. While I was chatting with some of the other ladies in my class I realised that I had added a brushed metal finish to the swallows and they looked amazing!

So Silversmith level I is over and as of May 30 it's official.. I'm in the ADVANCED class. I am having so much fun with this stuff. If I could pack it all in and run away to a little studio in the woods I would.

Silversmith level II baby! Rivets and Hinges. I'm not even going to tell you what I plan on making as my project in this class because, if I get it right, it's going to be the new coolest thing ever.

Long time no blog

Thanks for all the works of encouragement from facebook friends. I don't think I was cut out to be a blogger but hey, I like to stay in touch.

For those of you I have not been bragging to, I have started taking a silversmith class and I freakin love it. Attached is the not-so-great image of my first project.

It's a silver ring with a turquoise stone in a bezel setting. I have been showing it to everyone who will give me 2 seconds of their time and restraining myself from bragging my ass off. In other words, I'm impressed.

Things took a turn for this worse however when my current project, a brass wire bracelet, was both a) too big, and b) not as great as I thought it was going to look. I received much sympathy from my gals in class but damn, it really took the wind out of my sail. I spent the last half of the class trying to think of something I could do, one more project, before my last class in two weeks. I even went so far as to sequester myself in the bathroom for a few moments of peace to try and produce a spark of creativity. Don't worry friends, I sprung back and have hatched a new plan for my final piece. It'll be a secret until my next post. (with my track record that probably means some time in September)

"The Gals" and I have decided to take silversmith level II together. It's so nice to get along so well AND love the class I'm taking. I so look forward to Wednesdays right now.

I know, you' re thinking " But Shannon's a knitter! She's sworn to die by the needles. has her devotion gone astray?" Fear not good friend, I'm still rocking the needles with fierce longevity. I will never stray far. I'm working on modifiying some vintage Patons patterns these days. So far I've made 4 versions of the same hat with different results. Such fun. It's becoming more of a challenge than I wanted it to be but I'm starting to finally realise I can't always get things to go my way.

just a couple of things

Here are some of the recent things I have been working on. Sorry the images are so shoddy but my camera is really starting to suck.
I L*o*v*e the cassette clutch because the zipper is two-sided (across the top and down the right side in this image). There is no real benefit to this but I think it's fun. The ever elegant wristlette clutch is awesome too. The colours are not totally obvious but the dark one is deep teal and the lighter is an oatmeal. Both have the standard two inside pockets and are lined with a knit insert for durability and a unique touch. The antique button is two love birds. I love these buttons, they are so sweet, I'll be sad when I use the last one. I have four more of these on reserve for Cheryl to sell at Beach or Bust. I have to get on some more to send to Dani in Vancouver. My favourite things to knit right now are the little coin pouches. These mimic the shape of the wristlette clutch but are at least 1/4 the size and do not have a strap. I threw in a loonie for scale. The antique flower buttons are the cutest. The grey one in the midde had a green cameo button. I tested their capacity and they also fit ID/credit cards snuggly. No stretching or mis-shaping.

Sorry for the long pause.. no post since early January. Work's got me jumpin and I'm knitting double time to get ready for Spring. How satisfying is it to see some remnants of sunlight into the wee hours of the evening? This is just a note to advise I will have new pics of the stuff I'm working on posted by tomorrow. I have some wristlette clutches and some teeny-tiny change purses as well. Actually, the change purse could even fit bank, credit, ID cards etc. AND.... I have picked up the jewelry making pliers after a 6 or 7 year hiatus. Response so far has been favorable.

Here she is friends and she's a beaut! First thing you should know is that getting a tattoo on your side is so painful. so painful. so painful. ( I heard if you repeat something three times people will remember it.) It begins with the initial pain of sticking needles repeatedly in a place where you should only be tickled. Then, the aftershock of heat and feeling like you have been stung by hundreds of bees sets in.

But the second thing is that the mind has the fantatic ability to forget the magnitude of the pain you felt so that's the pay-off I guess. Anyway, Janet designed this for me and I couldn't be happier with it. I love it so much! It is currently the main image for my myspace page and I probably wont be taking it down any time soon.

This pretty much guarantees I wont be having any kids. I'm sure you moms out there are thinking I have no idea what I'm talking about, but there were times (between those where I was yanking on my own hair and doing deep breathing exercises) when I really wanted to hurt Janet for what she was doing to me. I threw the f-sharp like it was the only word I knew. It hurt that much.

Today my shoulders are still stuck up around my ears because my muscles are in knots. I see a lot of stretching in my near future. But I'm dumb enough to actually do it again.

Well happy New Year to you all. I had a nice 10 solid days off and I had no desire to go back to work. But I did. It's kind of nice to get back into the regular grind. Mindless in a way.
I spun some wool (finally) this weekend and it was so satisfying. I carded some dyed purple corridale and some natural wool together for a really soft mauve. Not a personal fave when it comes to colours but I liked how it turned out and someone will appreciate it eventually. Next I have some awesome teal to work with. I'm pretty excited about that.

For those of you who couldn't care less about knitting, how about that Toronto weather? Or the B.C .weather for that matter? I know I just talked about this the other day but holy smokes. I emailed with Christine in Vancouver today and she was saying that Stanley Park is finally reopened. Many beautiful old trees were destroyed and cannot be replaced. That's very sad and unfortunate to me - I'm sure you agree. I hope that the trees are put to good use. I think they should make a gigantic children's park with all of the huge trunks and branches. That way they'd stay close to home and get to offer up some usefulness instead of just becoming timber for the industry. (Although useful, but not as appreciated)

That's it for tonight friends. My internal clock is still out of wack from the holidays and I need to get to sleep early tonight to make sure I'm fresh and alert for the rest of the week.

Merry Christmas friends

Well, Christmas has come and gone. I have the week off and plan on doing some work as well as some spinning of new wool. With all of the Christmas knitting on the go I haven't had any time to spin. I don't think I've touched the wheel since September. I hope I still know how.

So you can't help but notice that we have no snow and we don't even need to wear coats outside right now in this little corner of Canada. I say it's lucky, some might be disappointed that we didn't have a white Christmas... I feel like we're getting Vancouver's weather and they are getting pummled with ours. It's nice to experience the other side every once in a while. I can imaging the Olympic board being thrilled with all of the felled trees in Stanley Park and wondering how many citizens would object to running a new 6-laner through there to accommodate the 2010 sea to sky traffic. Too bad about the destruction of the trees, but nature needs to keep us on our toes I guess.

I talked to Cheryl for a good while today. She 's having a great Christmas although she wasn't able to make it home as she'd hoped. Maybe in the Spring? I feel like I need to make a stop over there soon. Not with this weather though. I haven't written to Nadine in a while but Cheryl saw her while in Australia a couple of weeks ago and said she's great. And Muzz too.

So now begins the January/February blahs. Do I make a New Year's resolution that I know I wont keep? Or do I make one and actually keep it? Do I say screw the "resolution" and just decide to make exercise a part of my life? Do I get some hypnotherapy to make me LOVE exercise? Why stop at exercise? Do I plan to be a better person? Volunteer? Call my grandparents more? These are all things I'd like to do. So why don't I just do them? Why do I process the same thoughts over and over each year? Probably because I'm a lazy, insensitive jerk.

ANYWAY - I have some great ideas for knitting this year so I'm really looking forward to spending as much time on my knitting as possible. If I can't exercise, or volunteer, or call my grandparents more then so be it. I'd love to ultimately live off of my knitting at some point. Can't make it happen if I don't try, right? Well there it is, the thing that I'm "just gonna do". in 2007 I will put everything I have into my knitting and spinning and see what I can make of it. Documented right here.

AND... wait for it..... Janet started my knitting tattoo this Friday and IT IS AWESOME!!! I'm not going to show you until it's done. This is the first tattoo that has hurt like a mo-fo!!! Seriously. I thought I was so tough. I have some tattoos is a few sensitive areas but this one takes the cake. I actually squeaked and squealed a couple of times. But it's all going to be worth it. I'll be really excited when it's finished and I can show it to you.

Hope that keeps you hooked for now. Not sure when the tattoo will be done. Seems to be taking a little longer to heal than I'm used to.

Season's Greetings blog friends!

I've been working on my naughty and nice list and it's extensive, sorry for the lack of postings in the last while.

Well, things have certainly been busy. I had a successful day at Mondo Bazaar. It was nice to see that this was a small, local handicraft bazaar. I have to admit, I felt a little intimidated a day or two before, not knowing what to expect. I had a fantastic neighbour who makes gorgeous bags as spacegirl design co. Lucky girl is moving off to BC in January. Check out her stuff. I love it.

I made a bunch of adorables that sold well in Maude Salon, BC and have since shipped replenishment. It must be my old soul, but the vintage style toques are doing well for me this year. Should come in handy with all the snow they are getting. (Suckers) Hard to believe Toronto is a balmy 12 degrees this week, highs of 17 expected on Thursday! Hot damn.
With regular holiday knitting for the fam, Mondo, Maude, and the ever popular beer cozie orders, I am one busy little lady. Suffice it to say that I need to spend a little less time rocking the needles and a little more time at the kitchen sink. Once again, the hubs is nothing but understanding and completely accomodating.

Allow me to share with you a story from Christmas past. It's one of my faves.
I know that most of you have or have had a lifestyles similar to mine, and in your younger days you were probably more inclined to spend you last hard-earned $10 on two beers at the bar rather than Christmas presents. My most favourite Christmas, if I have the year right, was 1998. I was in the Whis. (AVPII for my homies) and I was blissfully poor. Luckily, I had fabulous roommates to share my hard luck with. On that Christmas eve we shared a smoke and took turns hiding so that the others could search for and wrap "Christmas Presents" from around the house for us. At the end of the night our tree has gifts piling out from all sides. We awoke the next day, shared a smoke, and began the festivities. Imagine my surprise to receive a tin of dry mustard! A roll of toilet paper! A spatula! We took photos of each person's expression as the gifts were revealed and it was so freakin fun. I really wish I had those pictures. That was the best.

I'm not sure I have a moral to that story, but I can point out the fact that we didn't spend a dime to have the most memorable Christmas of my life.
I'm going to make sure I do that again some time.

Today I wore my old/new leather jacket and warm hand-knit scarf. What I wouldn't do to have 365 cool Fall days... I'm sure there are many, okay most will disagree with me and even curse me to H-E-double hockey sticks for even allowing the thought to enter my mind.
But the warm fuzzies are what I live for - so poop on you.

Has anyone been to the ETSY craft website? Now that it's getting close to "that time" of year, I have a recommendation. Provide hand-crafted gifts for your loved ones this year. Make them yourself, or if your expertise lies elsewhere, find something on this website. Blow up a picture of a favorite occasion, Make a Christmas card in the form of a ransom letter, anything.

Enough with the Xboxes and Ipods and all that hulla-baloo. Teach someone a craft.

An army of beer cozies

At last! The 25 beer cozies are complete. Here is the proof:
I am fascinated by them and day dream about the day they all are put to use during the wedding they are intended for. I had a great time making them and it's very satisfying to think that someone will appreciate all the work that went into them. I can officially do this pattern in my sleep now. I think I'll give myself a break from beer cozies for a while and work on some other things for the Mondo Bazaar. As soon as I have any information, like fliers and vendors I will get the info out.

Next Sunday I'll be attending a stitch & bitch at Metro Mama's. I kind of hope it turns into a stitch & bitch happy hour. It's always pleasant to incorporate a beverage into the mix.

I am anxiously awaiting contact from my assassin. They haven't even tried to locate me yet which is a little disappointing but I'm staying on my toes. These are some cute new little caps I made from baby alpaca. They

are so soft! I love the simple pattern I created. They have cozy-cute buttons on the side for added sass. I believe they will be off to Vancouver by week's end.

Feast your eyes on these beauties!! I have officially completed my assignment for sock wars (in a record 24 hrs) and they will be sent on to the unlucky target tomorrow. Luckily she is in Ajax so it won't be too expensive to overnight them to her. I love brown, but now that I have completed them I'm not sure she will love them as much as I do. I'll make a deal with her that if she doesn't like them she can return them and I'll make them in another colour. I want her to be happy and feel like participating was worth the defeat!

Otherwise, I'm just finishing up my order of 25 beer cozies. just 8 more to go. I feel like I have been making them forever. I am also taking part in the Mondo Bazaar at the Gladstone Hotel on November 18th. It's from 10:30 - 5:30 pm and is the perfect opportunity to purchase hand made gifts for Christmas. It has become so successful that it now takes up two floors. I'll be located on the second so if you come by to see me you get to take a ride with the coolest elevator operator ever! I'm not going to give him away, you'll have to come and meet him yourself. I think one of the super cool things about this is that they serve adult beverages! It's going to be a fantastic day.

Gotta get going, too many projects on the go to stop and chat.

Who's feeling those wispy cool breezes creeping in? Now that the mornings are a little darker I get that feeling I'll probably never shake (not that I want to). I still get those " we just spent the baby bonus on new school clothes" feeling. You know, when your mom spent it on you in July so your new outfit and shoes have been banished to the closet and under no uncertain terms are you allowed to touch them. So every morning you wake up and wander over for a visit, to make sure they are still there, try them on, and envision the sound they'll make as you walk "the path" to school. If you were like me your toes were scuffed by the end of the day but who cares, SCHOOLS BACK IN! Loved school, until about 9th grade.

So much for staying current. .

Summer..hot. Vancouver.. great. No humidity, gentle breeze. Great trip with Hubs! I suppose I'll never get to live there again but it's always fun while it lasts.
Saw all the good buddies and had many a beverage as we tasted the multi cultural restaurants of the East end.

But now I'm home and it's back to knitting, spinning, and other realities. Who would have thought that someone would want a bulk order of beer cozies? (Well, I would) It's TRUE! 25 cozies on their way to Switzerland! I'm knitting my little fingers off and I'm pretty sure I can do this pattern in my sleep now. Happy to promote the coziness of beer.

To keep you all hooked I'm trying to stay current. Sooo, Bern and I are off to Vancouver on the 23rd. After making an attempt to plan a "vacation" for a week at home we caved and planned to head out west. The rationale was that we didn't want to hate ourselves come October when the weather is crud and the evenings are dreary.
My knit appear to be doing really well in Vancouver. If only I had the balls to try and shop them around the city. I took them into a new boutique close by on queen and although she liked what I had they were considered Fall colours. I don't know if it's the rainly thing, but Vancouver folk don't seem to care what the shade of my items are. I often work in earthy colours, not really focusing on colour coding the season. It's obvious I can't please everyone.
We need to get together and patio soon. Yes that means YOU, reader of this blog. I have the go ahead from my Naturopath to add many regular foods back into my diet. Pity about the dairy products. Further to the dairy thing, turns out it was probably the cause of all my childhood woes. The earraches, tonsilitis, eczema (is that how you spell it? who cares...) I wonder if I would have been different if these things were isolated much, much earlier?

Not much to report today - just wanted to keep up with this blog in the hopes that someone might find it interesting. Although with posts like this, what's so interesting about it?
Next post will be some of the wools I've been spinning. I can't wait for Fall already!

The cutest little purses ever! I still have the signature pockets inside and these
are made with the sweetest button for the clasp. I'm not one to use the words "sweet" and "cute" on the same day so believe me when I say these are
tops.

I'll photog. the wool I wound this weekend and send that off asap.
I'm thinkin' I'll spin for the rest of the summer to ensure all of my fall/winter 2006 stuff is 100% hand made.

Hard to resist the urge to knit though.

Happy Birthday to me.. Happy Birthday to me.. I spent the weekend spinning and bowling and loved every second of it. I'm having trouble getting pictures up on this site and I really want to show of the wool I spun this weekend. When I get home tonight, after more bowling, I'll try and get the pictures on.

Yikes! I've been knitting and working and knitting and working and have had not time to keep up with my new blog. I had to re-install new Windows on my computer and it's was a minor nightmare to save all files and anything else of importance. Nothing to show because I haven't reloaded my camera software but I've been spinning (since I fixed my spinning wheel) and knitting for myself, which is a nice change.
I promise to add pics soon (whoever you are that may happen upon my blog) of my latest idea. Nothing written down yet but it's all up here ( I'm pointing to my head...)

It certainly has been a few days. I'm busy working on my unofficial knit olympics project whick is a cute little tank top. I'm flying without a pattern on this one so I'm reluctant to show it until it's complete. I have two ideas on how I'd like to finish it and haven't really decided yet.
That's it. I have a S&B in Quelph at Janet' s today and hopefully will get lots of new knitters on board.

This is my first ball of spun wool! I'm very excited about it. I have more of the same colour strectching right now and a million ideas are running through my excited little brain about what to make for myself with it. Will I keep it forever? Will this be the first of many fab 100% hand-crafted items I fabricate? Below are some of my custom bags. These are soon to be off on consignment, some to Vancouver, BC at Maude Salon ( 2072 W 4th.) and some to Columbus, OH at Wholly Craft (3171 North High St)

I got my spinning wheel just before Christmas and it took me a while to get the hang of it. I didn't know how to use the break, etc. But I kept trying and all of the sudden things were happening! Instantly there was wool coming together in my hot little hands. I'm hooked. If anyone wants to pay me to stay home to spin and knit all day let me know.

Welcome! This is where I started. Beer Cozies. since then I've been trying to find new uses for old things through knitting. I've started to spin my own wool and I'll see where I end up from there. Living in Toronto I have the use of some really good knitting stores. Let me know if you like anything you see or read here. I'll update as often as I can.
